MagooMAGOO

A long time ago (about 1992) in a village far far away, a band called Magoo was formed. Influenced by bands such as Guided By Voices, Stereolab, Pavement, The Flaming Lips and a healthy dollop of John Peel, the band took its first steps towards being able to play. After releasing three singles on Noisebox Records they were snapped up by those canny scots Cchemikal Underground, where they released two albums and went on to play the CMJ in New York and at Glastonbury Festival. After parting ways with the chemikals the band started recording their third album at their own sickroom studios, eventually releasing it on London label Global Warming to great reviews but little else. 2003/2004 saw Magoo recording their fourth LP 'The All-Electric Amusement Arcade' and eight-track mini LP 'Popsongs'. They are still wowing audiences up and down the country, but still go unnoticed by the mainstream.

"Ferociously sweet noises, far too tough to be pop, far too cute to be rock" - Unpeeled

LARK

Melodic rock/pop band from Norwich, with reggae and roots influences. Started by friends who met at City College, whose boundaries have gradually extended - notedly starting when Daniel Collier returned from his native Tobago with a renewed enthusiasm for his reggae singing. They have recorded an album 'Seedy:UK' with the help of the NR5 Project in Norwich, the Ferry Boat and Norwich Access to Music, and now have it on the streets thanks to a loan from the Prince's Trust.

LE TETSUO

This art college trio sing in French at times, but this lead tune’s got the wayward aspect of a sea shanty by the Coral, and it’s dangerously-played garage rock. A cycle of freedom and restraint and multi-lingual vocals, reminding me most of old zine favourites Angelica: not their early ‘Teenage Girl Crush’ stuff, but the harder edge they had later. Tougher still are the remaining four tracks on this vinyl EP, which carry more of a classic-60s garage vibe and utilise male screams well. Short songs with long guitar solos! A good prospect. Complete with typically dirty lyrics and an acronym in its title, ‘Nickers Off Ready When I Come Home’ is a ‘Cannonball’ threatening to blow apart any time. Great. ‘Love Transmitter’ finishes slightly quieter, but with Charlie (girl) and Jack (boy) both on vocals, less harmonising than overlapping. Remember in music class when you used to sing a round, each little group singing the same bar at a different time? There’s an effect that should be used more often. “It’s just a message for the viewers at home” is what Le Tetsuo insist on telling us. And it seems the sound of a band captured in their early, ramshackle stages – the best place to catch a band, and if the band stays in that stage as long as they can, we’ll each have all the more rock ‘n’ roll fun.

LOS PLANETOS DEL AGUA

Return visit to Norwich for these Derby post-rockers.

LPdA formed in 1996 & released a storming first single on bearos records autumn 1999. John Peel was so impressed he played both sides of the record on his shows. Antenna Records were were so impressed they asked LPdA for an album. Having toured 'Too Many Bricks And Not Enough Sea' around the UK and Italy, LPdA are mixing material recorded with new member Jo Ddoran of The Telescopes on guitar and vocals.

"Our music is based upon improvisation from a central inspirational melody or 'hook'. The song develops from this point by 'collaboration' with the other instruments. The theory is to allow the song to develop naturally or 'organically' by using subtle changes and dynamics within the melody. The improvised instruments often draw the structure in directions which would never have been contemplated. All this leads to what we hope is 'interesting' and 'original' music" – LPdA themselves

CHIHIRO

UEA-based Chihiro were winners of campus radio station competition Livewire:Unsigned. Chihiro's experimental vocals, electronic effects and sedate approach contribute to their unique sound.
