NETTLE (DJ/RUPTURE + cellist) / FILASTINE / LUKE ABBOTT @ norwich arts centre

8pm | £5adv

NETTLE

Nettle are a boundary-crossing trio inspired by the shifting street musics of North Africa, the Middle East, southern Spain and beyond. Uniting
musicians from three continents (American turntablist/producer DJ/Rupture aka Jace Clayton; Moroccan multi-instrumentalist Abdel Hak; Scottish cellist Jenny Jones), Barcelona-based Nettle return to the UK for the first time since 2004.

The trio's live shows are intimate, powerful affairs. Abdel Hak and Jenny Jones form a strong melodic base on violin, cello, and oud (11-string
Arabic lute), and DJ/Rupture brings the low-end via live synths, beat-dubbing, and sampling the acoustic instruments. The resulting sound is truly hybrid: North African folksong, free improv, and classical Arabic composition meet digital hardcore, grimey electronics, and hip-hop.

DJ/Rupture (Soul Jazz/Tigerbeat 6/Soot) is one of the most innovative DJs around. Not only does Rupture make you dance, he does it by juxtaposing
the likes of Bounty Killer and Luciano Berio, Nas and DJ Scud, or Muslimgauze and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

'Mutable and pervasive, half-heard in the background noise of bars and public squares, or pulsating from basement windows and the impenetrable interior of cruising cars, this is a sound that crosses entire continents. The effect is like catching a pirate hiphop radio station late at night for the first time, crackling with static, clinging to the airwaves and demanding to be heard' - The Wire

* Abdel Hak was refused entry to the UK so Nettle performed as a duo, with Filistine joining them at the end of the set

Support:
FILASTINE
LUKE ABBOTT

Tour support is the equally wonderous Filastine. If you were to circle the Earth a few times, listening closely to the beats and noises of the
streets, it might sound something like his debut album 'Burn It'. A hip-hop backbone supports live polyriddims, collaborating musicians, lush electronica, field-recordings, and an array of guest MCs and singers.

Opening proceedings is Norwich-based producer Luke Abbott, whose debut 7in 'B,B,B,B,B,B,B,B,B,B,B' is released by Output Recordings on June 19.
