DON'S MOBILE BARBERS, FUN! YEAH!, LUCKY JIM @ the marquee
Don’s Mobile Barbers was formed by Mat and Rob in late 2001 in a place called Birstall. They'd been in bands before, but never in one that only had two people in it. Dmb took the time saved by not arguing with other band members and filled it with The Beach Boys, some ‘rock music’ and lots of other 'alternative shit'.
After they'd both learnt to play two instruments at once, they started performing live and have gone on to support such bands as The Shins, The Research, The Webb Brothers, Brendan Benson, and Death Cab For Cutie. Their set at the 2004 Summer Sundae Weekender caught the attention of Steve Lamacq, who went on to play them on his 6Music show and remark ‘The drummer plays drums and keyboard at the same time and the singer plays guitar and keyboard, at the same time……. They’re great!’
‘Boom Times’ is Dmb’s third album in two years , and it continues to mine a rich seam of fuzzily emotional pop in the vein of Grandaddy, Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips – with their minimal arrangements creating a sound even more powerfully dynamic than that of many larger bands.
Mat and Rob have also had a couple of tracks released in the US – a version of ‘Why I Cry’ featured on a Magnetic Fields tribute album and a split EP with The Belles released on Anodyne Records.
They will be playing live around the UK in January 2006 to promote the new album and are scheduled to appear at the 2006 Green Man Festival.
‘An effortless command of pop and indie idioms with the ability to seamlessly blend a Beach Boys’ falsetto with a chunky guitar chord’ - Comes With A Smile
